I love, love, love this book! I use it all the time now teaching first and second grade and when I was switched to grade 3-5 language I discovered there was a book for those grades as well! It’s called Marvelous Mini Lessons-Teaching Beginning Writing K-3, by Lori Jamison Rog.
What I love about this book is that ALL of the ideas are useful and can be implemented right away in your classroom writing program. They aren’t whole units that you have to follow but rather mini lessons that you can throw in to your writer’s workshop on an as needed basis.
One of my favourite lessons from this book is called Bubblegum Spelling. It’s a mini lesson for teaching kids how to stretch out the sounds. I teach this lesson early on in the year so that we can use the technique all year long when my students come to a tricky word. I have tried every mini lesson in this book at one time or another and I found every one of them useful, effective and engaging.
Here is the cover of her second book: Marvelous Mini Lessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing and this is the cover:
I hope you are inspired to check out this book and let me know how you like it!!
